Region of Abbey Lieve Vrouw van Koningshoeven, La Trappe

The Koningshoeven Abbey is located close to Tilburg, in the North-Brabant region of the Netherlands. Its brewery produces the famous "La Trappe" beer. After having discovered the mysteries of its production, visitors can taste this excellent beer in the abbey's tasting room.

History

The Trappists established in Koningshoeven, in an area near Tilburg in 1881. They cultivated the area, created a brewery and in 1891, the Koningshoeven monastery obtained the status of Abbey. In the following years the abbey was enlarged: a new monastery and church were built and in July 1893 the community moved into the new complex of buildings. In 1900, the monks of Koningshoeven founded a new community in Zundert.

In recent years, the complex of Koningshoeven has been completely renovated. Nowadays the monks also run a bakery and in 2006, they began to produce their own chocolate.

  • Shop In the monastery shop you can find bread, cookies, jam, chocolate, as well as soap, cheese, jam, candles and granola, produced in other monasteries.

  • Brewery The brewery is open for guided tours.

  • Restaurant Tasting room: A la carte lunch; tasting session or special excursions; larger functions with an abbey buffet for 10 persons

Tourist Information

There's always something to do and experience in the Dutch region of Brabant, with a wide range of activities to suit everyone. What’s more, everything is as good as just around the corner. Brabant is a truly vibrant place and there are many opportunities for visitors ‘to come and do’. The world famous painter, Vincent van Gogh, was born and raised here and often used the Brabant countryside for inspiration. Indeed, many of the places which van Gogh painted can still be visited today.

Part of your holiday in Brabant should, of course, include a visit to one or more of the Trappists' abbeys which are spread across the region. Abbey Maria Toevluchtsoord can be found in the West, Koningshoeven in the centre and Achelse Kluis to the East.

What else does Brabant offer the 'do-rist'? Let’s start with its festivals and events such as the GLOW Festival of Light and its two major flower parades. Then there are the cities such as Breda, Tilburg and Eindhoven with their excellent shopping areas; the region’s culture, heritage and art – such as Vincent van Gogh’s birthplace and cultural roots, or the Trappist breweries; and the theme parks, Efteling and Safaripark Beekse Bergen (the Brabant big five).

For nature-lovers and those who crave the outdoors Brabant has an outstanding National Park, Loonse en Drunense Duinen. If it’s recreation and relaxation that you’re looking for, there are many marked cycling, MTB and hiking trails throughout the region with more sporty options such as horseback riding and golf courses to be found in the wonderful Brabant countryside. Last but not least, Brabant has suitable accommodation for all types of traveller. Indeed, the people of Brabant are more than happy to share their best kept secrets with you. They are known as sociable and welcoming people who work hard, but certainly also know how to enjoy the good things in life.enjoy the good things in life.

Sample the 5 Trappists - Short cut Het Bels Lijntje

If you don’t want to cycle the entire route it’s possible to shorten the route. To do this, take the Bels Lijntje alternative route. It follows the route of a former railway track between Tilburg and Turnhout. The last goods-train used this track in 1973.In 1989, a cycle path was built on the track bed from Tilburg to Turnhout. There are several signalman’s houses along the route and a valuable fauna and flora is flourishing on and near the track bed. This heavily used cycle track is definitely worth discovering. Many hospitable businesses welcome cyclists along the route with catering and sightseeing opportunities.
Distance: 17 km
