Region of Abbey Maria Toevlucht, Zundert

Maria Toevlucht Abbey is situated in the Netherlands, among the forests and pasture lands of Zundert, close to the Belgian border. The amber coloured beer brewed in Zundert is one of  two Trappist beers produced in the Netherlands and can be bought at the abbey’s shop.

History

The Trappist monks of Konigshoeven Abbey established the monastic community of Zundert, near the Belgian border, at the end of 19th century. They quickly settled into the new monastery buildings and in the following years, the number of monks increased rapidly. The monks’ primary economic support came from their dairy produce, garden produce and their handcrafted goods. From the end of the 1960s onwards, the abbey began to host a large number of pilgrims, offering devotees the possibility of periods of meditation and prayer.

Between 2000 and 2005 several of the abbey buildings were extended and renovated. The brewery was built in 2011 and beer production started in 2013. At the moment, there are 21 monks who make up the Trappist community of Zundert.
