Region of Abbey Onze Lieve Vrouw van Nazareth, Brecht

The Abbey Onze Lieve Vrouw van Nazareth in Brecht, located in the Campine region in the Belgian province of Antwerp, is an abbey of Trappistine nuns. In the abbey it is possible to buy many kinds of environmentally-friendly soaps, labelled as "Trapp", that are produced by the nuns.

In 1236 the monastery of Our Lady of Nazareth at Lier, in the Duchy of Brabant, joined the Cistercian Order. The nuns of Brecht developed their community and lived peacefully for centuries, until 1794, when the French army invaded the Austrian Netherlands. At that point, the religious policy of France forced the community to close. After the Belgian Revolution and the independence of Belgium in 1830, the region became politically stable and the conditions were acceptable for a new religious community to be established. Nevertheless, it was only in the 20th century that the renewal of monastic life in this area succeeded. In 1950, the monks of Westmalle prepared the new monastery for the 23 nuns arriving from the Soleilmont Abbey. The nuns of Brecht developed their religious and spiritual life and contributed to the enlargement of the Trappist order.

At present there are 26 sisters in the Abbey of Brecht.
