Practical information

None of the buildings of the abbey is open to the public.

History

Around 1230, Gilles de Walcourt, Count of Rochefort, founded a Cistercian monastery within his possessions in the province of Namur. Because of its position, Rochefort Abbey was devastated by the religious wars in the second half of the 16th century. In 17th century, the Abbey was again at the centre of the military confrontation during the Thirty Years War. Another crisis was caused by the French Revolution. In particular, in 1797, the French Army occupied the Austrian Netherlands, confiscated the Abbey that was destroyed. In 1887 the monks of Achel restored the abbey and rebuilt the brewery. In 2010, a part of the abbey was damaged by a fire but it was immediately restored and the Trappist community continued its life and its activities.

Opening Hours

The abbey is not open for visitors.
