The birth of a Trappist brewery in Rome!

May 11, 2015 –

A new trappist beer is born! Tre Fontane in Rome has been given the right to use the "Authentic Trappist Product" label on the new Trappist beer. For the monks of Tre Fontane, this is the proverbial 'icing on the cake' following the successful completion of a long process.

The official tasting of the product was held on May 4 by the members of the General Meeting of the International Trappist Association (ITA). A vote was then taken by the members of the ITA Board of Directors, and the right to use the "Authentic Trappist Product" label on the new Trappist beer was granted.

The beer is flavoured with Eucalyptus, a tree that has strongly influenced the history of Tre Fontane Abbey. Cistercians of the Strict Observance came to Tre Fontane only in 1868 and started the planting of 125.000 eucalyptus trees, which still surround the abbey.

The Italian Trappist monastery is the only Abbey in Rome and is located in the EUR district, just south of the city centre.  The complex of the Tre Fontane is open every day from 6:00 to 20:30 and has a shop and in season a kiosk where you can buy oil, honey, liquor, chocolate, trappist beer of the Tre Fontane Abbey and other Italian monasteries. There is no tasting room.
