New marked walking routes at Achel

november 2015 - The seven ‘Trappist walking routes’ around Achel have been extended with three new walks. They are called the Engelszell walk, Spencer walk and Zundert walk. Both the seven existing routes and the 3 new routes are named after Trappist beers. The existing walking routes are called Orval, Chimay, Rochefort, Westmalle, Westvleteren and Achel, La Trappe. The three new routes are named after the three new Trappist beers.

The Spencer is a completely wheelchair friendly route. Departures and arrivals are at the vacationparc at De Dielis in de Dielishoek. This route is 4.2 km long. Spencer Trappist Ale is a blond beer with an alcohol percentage of 6.5%.

A second walking route is named after the Austrian Engelszell. The beer is brewed since 2012 at the brewery of Stift Engelszell in Engelhartszell an der Donau. This is the only Trappist monastery in Austria. The Gregory is a dark beer with an alcohol percentage of 9.7%. This route starts at the Michielshof in Achel.

The other new walk, Zundert, departs in the city park in Hamont and at the Schepenhuis in Cranendonck. Zundert is an amber coloured beer with an alcohol percentage of 8%. This walk crosses the border between The Netherlands and Belgium and connects the two villages of Hamont and Budel.
